How did I celebrate my 4th of July this year? Face-planted my mug in my tablet the entire day! Let me tell you, while everyone is off setting off their little firecrackers, Blood to Dust was explosive all on its own! Who needs sparkly lights and loud ass noises in the sky when this book was quietly igniting me up from within?!
L.J. Shen delivered this dark romance at its finest. This book was fucking intense! There’s so many reasons why I love this book and let me let you in on a secret, I think I kind of fell in love with this author as well. I have so much to say… so I am going to do this a little differently (leaving all quotes out of my review; I will create more edits for it instead). I am going to break it down of why I am so in love with this gem of a book! Gem? That just sounds too pretty and dainty for a badass read like this… this book FUCKING ROCKS, BLOWS THE FUCKING ROOFTOP OFF!
Reason #1: How the fuck can I not love it, how can anyone that read it not?
Reason #2: I was home, literally home. This book was set in Nor Cal, and all the places that were mentioned were pretty much in my backyard. Okay, maybe not really but it was pretty damn awesome to actually know where all these places are. I even daydreamed that they ended up knocking on my door (sighs).
Reason #3: The author’s writing was out of this fucking world! The word choices, was insanely-ridiculously-FABULOSO! I think I took twice as long to read this book because I spent just as much time highlighting quotes and passages as I read! Okay, maybe I am exaggerating. Truth is I may have only highlighted every other page and not every page — shoot me, then again don’t because guns are for pussies.
Reason #4: Nate aka Beat – He just climbed up that ladder (I volunteer to be that ladder) to the top of the bad boy category and have completely stolen my heart. Shit, he is probably one man I will plead to mistreat me and I will purposely misbehave just for him (don’t judge me, you do not even know until you had a taste of him).
Reason #5: Prescott aka Pea – I have read my fair share of strong female characters, but Pea is the mother fucking Queen! I fell just as hard for her as I did with Nate. I can’t even call her a spit-fire because she is so much more than that. She is exactly as described – a damn storm.
Reason #6: As tough as these two are, L.J. Shen did a kick-ass job keeping the story in line. Yes, it’s a fiction but she made it so that certain situations are still very real and that just made me love this story all the more. Even though these two characters are bad-asses, there are moments when you cannot always be invincible and she kept them tangible.
Reason #7: This may be a dark, raw and gritty read but there were plenty of moments where I was laughing my ass off. The dialogue between these two characters is priceless. I had to quote some of them out loud and was told that the reason why I love it so much is because it’s the kind of shit I would say (whatever [insert eye roll])
Reason #8: Even with my highlighting away like it’s the end of the world, I was sucked in so much that if Beat and Pea ever needs a sidekick – I am there. I will go to prison for these two!
Reason #9: Nate and Pea redefined “Lazy Fucking.” You just have to read it to find out.
Reason #10: Simple – Blood to Dust is BADASS!
BONUS Reason: I just realized my new flavor is peach 😉
