Okay, I pretty much read two YA (Young Adult) novels back to back that broke the mold for my expectations for how I SHOULD feel and will always WANT to feel reading this genre. The other book is Jellicoe Road, and you can find that review on my blog site or on Goodreads. But this review will be solely on my take on Salt to the Sea. I had to mention it broke the mold for this genre only because it changed my expectation for YA novels due to it unexpectedly raising the bar that I was never aware could be raised.
Reasons why I love this book (crap where do I even start) so what do I do best when I don’t know? I make a list, LOL (if you follow my blog, you already know this happened a few times):
1. It’s historical and believe it or not, this was the genre that got me hooked on reading in the first place as a kid. The strangest thing is history was my most hated subject in school. Go figure!
2. Alternate POVs, are you kidding me?!?! My FAVORITE reading format because how can I or anyone for that matter not love getting into someone’s head and heart and really know what they are thinking and feeling without filters?!
3. The characters. I loved EVERY SINGLE characters even the one that gave me bad vibes and the creeps!
4. I started questioning everything in my life – of how easy we really have it, of how much we take things for granted.
After reading a book like Salt to the Sea, it got my head spinning in a way that scares me and forces me to appreciate the world we are currently in. This is the kind of story that shatters your heart and seep into your soul but also shows you how evil the world can be. How fear can turn people ugly yet strengthens others.
Did you know I physically found myself squirming and wincing reading this book? It twisted everything in me into knots and with everything going on right now, reading something like this scares me even more. I had a terrible night of sleeping because I kept waking up to crazy dreams after this. But as always, it does leave you with hope… is that ever enough for situations like this?
I almost rated this read as a 6 Stars (like WHOA) and the only reason why I didn’t is because I personally felt the chapters (POV) was too short. I yearned for more… that is NOT even a bad thing.. it just felt like this story could have been much more. I don’t even know why I feel that way when what was delivered already made me feel so much already. Just a personal taste. 🙂 Still a MUST-READ and became my top 2016 reads as well.
